Research, applied math & random side quests

Ryan Huang

i pick up too many side quests. lately they involve light, brains and food systems, and most of them turn into math eventually.

Research

How does light get out of a semiconductor, what changes in a brain with Parkinson's, and why does food stop short of the people who need it? Different fields, same habit of not leaving a question alone.

Interface Polarization Ceiling and Sidewall Recovery of TM Emission in Deep-Ultraviolet AlGaN LED Packages

If most of the light an LED makes is polarized the wrong way to leave through the top, where does it go, and can the sides of the chip get some of it back?

My part
i worked on the optical modelling, including a polarization-resolved photon-extraction budget that tracks TE and TM light separately through the package.

Co-authored abstracts on food scarcity

Food can exist in a city and still be out of reach for the people who need it. Where does access actually break down?

My part
co-author on both abstracts (third author on most of my abstracts), presenting the posters in 2027. the research grew out of platepath, a food-access project i started on my own.

Founder · Aug 2023 – present

I founded Afinitune to make financial literacy available to everyone. We present at community centres and speak at public events about how money actually works.

What I did
I founded the initiative and lead it: building the presentations, taking them to community centres, and speaking at public events to advocate for financial literacy that's open to everyone.

Founder & project lead

What it does
Food banks, community meals, discount grocers and benefit programs all exist, but finding the one that's open, nearby and right for you is its own small research project.

photon-trace

Author

A small Monte-Carlo ray tracer for a cross-section of a deep-UV LED: TE/TM dipole emission, Fresnel reflection and total internal reflection, running live in the browser.

What it does
It's hard to feel why TM light gets trapped from equations alone. Watching 3,000 rays do it makes the mechanism obvious.
My part
I wrote the tracer: polarization-dependent emission sampling, Fresnel coefficients per interface, an absorbing p-side, and the escape-cone puzzle built on the same optics.

Author

The research-to-publish pipeline behind The Yorkline: scrapers, de-duplication, school-name resolution, and a validator that fails the build if an article cites a source that isn't in the inventory.

What it does
A student newspaper covering hundreds of schools needs every claim traceable to a source, or it stops being trustworthy.
My part
I built the pipeline: collection, merge and de-duplication, selection, and the validation step that runs before every build.
